How do I let a friend know there is a fee for my services?

I have a friend that has asked me to do her daughters senior pictures, and hair and make-up for prom. I own a salon and do photography work, on the side. I’m a little new to the photography, somewhat ameturish, but did a wedding last year.
When I did the wedding, I didn’t state any terms, and ended up feeling kind of used in the end. I’ve had sisters use me for hair services, and I’ve just come to the conclusion I really should charge something to avoid feeling used. There’s a lot of time, work, and even expense involved. How do I bring this up to my friend, since she hasn’t said either way if she plans to pay or not? All she said is she couldn’t afford a professional photographer. We mostly email so I was thinking of writing ” You mentioned cost was a concern, so I wanted to get an idea of your budget. How much do you want to spend for the hair, make-up, and printed pictures, and how many pictures will you need?’ How does that sound? Any other tactful suggestions?

Since you stated that she is a “friend”, I would start by saying how much of a discount I would be able to give her for services rendered. This should give her the tact needed to know, it will not be provided free.
