What flash/strobe equipment do I need?
I have been doing mostly outdoor portrait photography this summer using natural light and have been asked to do my first indoor church setting wedding this winter. I want to be prepared without formal training by finding the correct equipment and practicing with it first. I’m wondering what the best set up, particularly what lighting and flash equipment will I need for a church (smaller church but possibly cathedral or vaulted ceilings) for formal pictures? I’m looking for specifics. For instance, if I use a strobe, what wattsecond power would be best? If I purchase a strobe, do I need a remote separately or do they normally come with it? I may sound like a fool, but from doing my own research and watching other photographers in this setting, I know kind of what I’m looking for but need to know a professional’s opinion on brands and specifics. Also, I shoot with a Canon 50D.
Firstly find out from the minister if you can use flash inside the church – some don’t allow it, especially during the ceremony. If not you’ll need some fast glass to cope with the light levels.
Forget studio strobes – although they are more power (150 W/s up to 1200 W/s or so,) unless you have a separate battery pack (which can cost as much as the strobe) you’ll be limited to mains. You don’t want cables everywhere tripping the guests up! They’ll also be heavier & more cumbersome to move around.
Small hotshoe flashes (speedlights) are the way to go. They put out about 60 W/s but will be plenty indoors. You’ll need a separate remote.
Radio triggers such as the RF602′s are good – highly popular on the Strobist blog & good range & reliability. Again being wireless, less hassle of wires going everywhere & more freedom to move around. Better than an optically triggered system too which relies on line of sight.
You’ll also need some stands and some light modifiers – a small softbox would do – if you are able to set up gear. If not you’ll just have to stay mobile. A reflector is a must (a 5-in-1 reflector can be used as a flag & a scrim as well).
I recommend David Ziser’s book on lighting for weddings – an excellent resource;
